- My ISP in Toronto just put in rack modems and we are having all manner of
- problems. They have USR, Bell and many Tech reps there. Prior they had Courier
- external modems and all was fine.
-
- The change to rack modem caused the following problems and more:
-
- Frequent Disconnects
- GVC (MaxTech) modems unable to connect
- Other modems connecting at reduced speed, often Rockwell V34 chip based.
-
- Prior to change few users had problems connecting at 28.8, now only USR modems
- do that and only since they upgraded the rack modems to the latest firmware.
- Unbelievable that USR shipped them without the latest firmware. Some of us with
- Sportsters ended up with the death spiral connect caused at their end by the old
- firmware. They have upgraded to the latest USR issue (V34+).
-
- We are now a month into the hardware change and GVC users (and some others -
- Rockwell V34 chip?) cannot get 28.8 connect. Some of us lucky USR users are
- getting 33.6 or 31.2. I get 31.2 or 28.8, but my call is long distance through a
- bulk reseller service so I don't expect 33.6 connects.
-
- To summarise our experience only USR users did not encounter problems. All other
- users suffered connect speed losses, with a number being severe 2400, to some
- users unable to connect at all. The 'noise' in the support news group has been
- something else............ with a whole cross section of comments, from some
- users being okay to others demanding money back.
-
- I think you are not imagining things.
